SHORT LOVE STORY:
Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini are two figures of lovers who have become part of the popular sentimental imagination, although they also belong to history and literature.
A large part of the fifth canto of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy is dedicated to them.
In the Commedia, the two young men represent the main souls condemned to punishment in Dante's Inferno in the second circle, that of the lustful.
In life they were brothers-in-law (Francesca was in fact married to Gianciotto, Paolo's brother) and this love led to their death at the hands of Francesca's husband.
Francesca explains to the poet how it all happened: reading the book that explained the love between Lancelot and Guinevere, the two of them found warmth in the trembling kiss that they exchange at the end and that characterises the beginning of their passion.
